It’s not very often that a cigar completely rocks my socks off right off the bat. La Abeja definitely did exactly that. It was hands down the best cigar I have smoked in (at least) a year. Now, most of you may not be familiar with this new brand, but I highly recommend that you do get acquainted with what they have to offer. Because if La Abeja keeps it up, they can easily become a big contender in this industry.
Kevin McKenna, the heart, brains and palate behind La Abeja, started this project back in 2011. His final blend, which was released February 2013, uses some fantastic Aganorsa leaf from Casa Fernandez. It has a Nicaraguan Cafe Rosado wrapper, Nicaraguan Criollo Binder and Nicaraguan Ligero filler. It comes four vitolas currently: Corona (5.5 x 48), Robusto (5 x 50), Toro (6 x 52) and Sultana (6.5 x 60). When I initially read the details of this cigar, my mouth started to water.
From the aroma of the leaf, to the cold draw, the first puff all the way to the final puff, the La Abeja did nothing but impress me. It is a complex, yet balanced smoke, very Cubanesque. I would consider it medium in strength but full in body. I picked up some wonderful notes of cedar, sweet floral, rich earth and just the perfect amount of spice to round it out without overwhelming the palate. I absolutely wanted to have another right away, after burning it down to a mere nub.
I certainly think this is a cigar that can (and will) be enjoyed by a variety of palates. Unfortunately it isn’t nationally available yet. Currently you can get La Abeja at the following locations (so call and ask for some!!):
Oxmoor’s Smoke Shop, Louisville, KY
The Party Source, Northern, KY and Cincinnati, OH
Jenuwine’s, Sterling Heights, MI
Churchill’s, W Bloomfield and Birmingham, MI
Smokes on Burdick, Kalamazoo, MI
Smoky’s, Bloomfield and Northville, MI
And hopefully in Maryland very soon as well. This is a cigar I could very easily have in my regular rotation, a box worthy purchase. The construction, draw and flavor profile were completely flawless. I look forward to seeing more from Kevin McKenna and La Abeja and I wish you much success.
